Wednesdays with WashU is a webinar series featuring Washington University alumni, faculty, parents, and friends from around the world. 

Join Carmon Colangelo, Ralph J. Nagel Dean, Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts and E. Desmond Lee Professor for Collaboration in the Arts; Adrienne Davis, William M. Van Cleve Professor of Law and Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs & Diversity; and Sabine Eckmann, William T. Kemper Director and Chief Curator, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, for a conversation with Komal Shah about her passion for collecting art and uplifting the work of underrepresented artists.

Komal Shah and her husband, Trustee Gaurav Garg, BS ’88, BS ’88, MS ’90, have been collecting art since 2008 with a focus on contemporary art by women  and artists of color.  Their collection includes works by Amy Sillman, Charline Von Heyl, Jacqueline Humphries, Laura Owens, Joan Mitchell, Mark Bradford, and Sam Gilliam and has been ranked among the world’s top 200 art collections by ARTnews.    

Active in the art world, Komal serves as a trustee at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Americas Foundation. Komal and Gaurav sponsor a conversation series, called “Artists on the Future,” at Stanford University that focuses on the intersection of art and sociopolitical issues.

Komal earned her undergraduate degree from Gujarat University and master’s degrees from Stanford University and the Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley. She has worked as an engineer and executive for tech companies including Oracle, Netscape, and Yahoo, and has organized fundraising campaigns for various non-profit organizations. 

Her son, Bijoy, is a freshman at the McKelvey School of Engineering.
