The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in San Diego County, providing nutritious food to people in need, advocates for the hungry, and educating the public about hunger related issues. The Food Bank works to acquire, store, organize, and distribute food through a network of 400 nonprofit partner organizations that include food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and low-income daycare centers in communities throughout San Diego County. The Food Bank also distributes food directly to those in need at 183 distribution sites throughout the county. Last year, the Food Bank distributed 26 million pounds of food, and the Food Bank serves, on average, 370,000 people per month in San Diego County.

We'll begin the afternoon with a, introduction and tour of the facility by Liz Sheahan, VP of Development at the Food Bank, followed by a light lunch. Volunteers will then help in their warehouse with a variety of projects and tasks including cleaning and packaging fresh produce for immediate distribution, inspecting, sorting, boxing, and labeling food donations, and assembling food packages for their Senior Food Program, Moms & Children Food Program, Emergency Food Assistance Program, and Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. The Food Bank is counting on our volunteers so please take your registration as a firm commitment to the organization. They are also unable to accommodate walk-ins.
