Join WashU Volunteers for a day of service with Meals on Wheels Central Texas (MOWCTX). Volunteers preparing groceries as part of The Healthy Options Program for the Elderly or HOPE is a special part of MOWCTX that delivers groceries to their clients with a need for additional food items to help supplement the home delivered meals they serve. HOPE is a collaboration between Meals on Wheels Central Texas and the Central Texas Food Bank. Shelf stable groceries are delivered to Meals on Wheels Central Texas once a month from the Central Texas Food Bank. Volunteer teams create individual grocery bags containing the items each month and, at a later time, other volunteers deliver the bags to the homes of the clients in need. Individuals will find their time well spent as they contribute to enriching the lives of Austin’s homebound elderly and disabled by delivering HOPE groceries.
Adam Hauser, AB '82, is the President and CEO of Meals on Wheels Central Texas’ (MOWCTX) whose mission is to nourish and enrich the lives of older adults and people with disabilities. They accomplish that by offering the people they serve a holistic range of person and home-centered services that allow them to age in place with dignity and respect. They are best known for their signature Meals on Wheels program; in fact, MOWCTX is one of the largest meal-delivery organizations in the state, distributing 3,000 meals each business day to homebound older adults, people with disabilities, and senior center participants. But often times, their vulnerable neighbors require additional assistance beyond meals in order to maintain their independence. MOWCTX’s wide continuum of other life-sustaining programs provides help in those situations.
Schedule:
9:00 – 10:00 a.m. – Breakfast and Introduction of Meals on Wheels; Tour of Facility
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Breaking down pallets of shelf-stable items and packing 500 bags to be delivered to clients
