The WashU Climate Change Community invites you to a special virtual event discussing climate action efforts across generations featuring author Lawrence MacDonald and Chloe Ames (AB '17).
During this event, our panelists will explore questions such as:
- What can I do as an individual that could positively impact the climate?
- How can different generations collaborate to address climate change?
- What are the most effective actions we can take right now?
- Is it too late to make a difference?
Lawrence MacDonald is a writer, policy communications expert, and "boomer" climate activist. After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara, he studied Chinese in Taiwan and worked as a journalist for 15 years in Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul, and Manila. Returning to the United States in the early 1990s, he worked as a communications officer at the World Bank and as vice president for communications at two Washington, D.C., based think tanks: the Center for Global Development, and the World Resources Institute. During this time, he became increasingly active in the U.S. climate movement, and was arrested three times in civil disobedience actions to draw attention to the climate emergency. He and his wife live in Arlington, Virginia and have two grown children who are also active in the climate movement.
Chloe Ames is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, class of 2017, where she majored in environmental policy and served as the co-president of Green Action, the student environmental justice group. Ames recently graduated from the Yale School of the Environment (YSE), class of 2024, with a Master’s of Environmental Management degree, specializing in climate resilience policy and planning studies with a focus on extreme heat and flooding hazards. Prior to her graduate studies, she was the senior outreach organizer for the Union of Concerned Scientists, where she worked to advance federal climate and clean energy action by partnering with organizations and mobilizing hundreds of thousands of individuals across the country to advocate for national climate and clean energy initiatives, including the successful passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.
Ames has also worked at the local and regional levels in Los Angeles, CA and Austin, TX to provide capacity building for government agencies on climate adaptation and clean transportation topics. She is currently seeking opportunities to continue to advance climate and social resilience initiatives across the United States.
Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with fellow alumni and explore how every generation can contribute to the fight against climate change. We look forward to seeing you online!
